Dead Can Dance

Dead Can Dance se formó en Melbourne en el año 1981 estableciéndose inicialmente en Australia. Al no tener grandes perspectivas de éxito en ese país se trasladaron a Londres donde tras un año firmaron para el legendario sello de rock alternativo 4AD, convirtiéndose en una de sus bandas más importantes. Continuaron trabajando juntos hasta adentrados los '90, cuando comenzaron a trabajar por separado. Lisa Gerrard retornó a Australia, mientras Brendan Perry se fue a Irlanda, lugar en que compró una vieja iglesia, Quivy Church, en la cual vive y trabaja. Asignar un género musical a Dead Can Dance es difícil, puesto que su estilo era particularmente ecléctico. Sin embargo, a menudo sus primeros trabajos son clasificados como música gótica. En sus últimas obras, tras The Serpent's Egg, las fuentes de las que beben son la música antigua y las músicas llamadas étnicas, lo que les imprime un estilo característico. Como consecuencia, sus últimos discos son extraordinariamente diferentes a los tres primeros. El nombre Dead Can Dance es a menudo engañoso. Lisa Gerrard (Melbourne 12 de abril de 1961) compositora y cantante australiana. Integrante principal de la banda Dead Can Dance.

Biografía

Lisa creció en el barrio multi-étnico de East Prahan, donde convivió entre las culturas griega, turca, italiana, irlandesa y árabe. Esta diversidad cultural tuvo gran influencia en su música, particularmente en sus posteriores álbumes con Dead Can Dance y en su trabajo solista y en grupo. En su ultimo trabajo, Lisa Gerrard (4AD), La cantante y compositora australiana recapitula por vez sus más de veinte años de carrera con Dead Can Dance y en solitario. La retrospectiva ilustra su progresión desde el goticismo barroco de su trabajo con Brendan Perry y sirve para adentrarse en su personal mundo etéreo que ampara devaneos neoclásicos y ambientales, incursiones en la fusión étnica y sus exitosas aportaciones a las bandas sonoras de ‘Ali’, ‘El dilema’ o la multipremiada ‘Gladiator’.

Brendan Perry
Brendan Perry (Londres, 30 de junio de 1959). Músico, intérprete, compositor e integrante principal, junto a Lisa Gerrard, del grupo musical Dead Can Dance. Comenzó su carrera musical como vocalista y bajista de la banda australiana Scavengers (posteriormente Marching Girls) con la que nunca alcanzaría un contrato discográfico. En 1981 forma en Melbourne (Australia) el grupo Dead Can Dance junto a Lisa Gerrard, Paul Erikson y Simon Monroe, una de las bandas de culto más importantes de la escena gótica, si bien su estilo irá evolucionando hasta convertirse en una banda ecléctica mostrando influencias del dark ambient, música medieval, africana y oriental. En 1998 la banda se disuelve y Brendan Perry y Lisa Gerrard toman caminos separados. En 2000 lanza su primer album en solitario Eye of the Hunter con el sello 4AD.
